    Modes built off the major scale are patterns of notes arranged using intervals of either a half step or whole step.

    The major scale (ionian mode) has a half step between the 3rd and 4th degrees, also the 7th and 8th degrees. The 8th degree is the octave of the root. All other intervals are whole steps (equaling 2 half steps).

    Learning these modes will help your fretboard geography. Acclimating their sound will help your ear. You’ll be able to start recognizing relationships between notes.
